Below are answers to some of our frequently asked questions about items.

What is an item?

An item is a label that represents an individual product or group of products, services, or charges.

Items are mapped to tax codesHoverTT.png to group like kinds of products, services, or charges together. When AvaTax processes a transactionHoverTT.png, the item-to-tax code mapping identifies the correct tax code to use. You can add items one at a time or import many items at once.

Why is my item mapped to tax code P0000000?

Every item imported must have a tax codeHoverTT.png assigned to it. If an item's tax code field is left blank during import, AvaTax assigns tax code P0000000. Items with a tax code of P0000000 should be properly mapped to a custom tax code or an AvaTax System tax codeHoverTT.png .

Why is my item mapped to tax code U0000000?

Every item added must have a tax codeHoverTT.png assigned to it. If an item's tax code field is left blank, AvaTax assigns tax code U0000000. Items with a tax code of U0000000 should be properly mapped to a custom tax code or an AvaTax System tax codeHoverTT.png .
