Manage Company Locations

A company location in AvaTax  is a record of the physical presence of a company or its personnel. If you've added company locations in the Admin Console and your accounting software, AvaTax uses those location codes during tax calculation to report on sales by individual location.

Use the information below to make changes to locations you've already entered into AvaTax.

Locations that already have transactions associated with them can't be edited, to make sure that your records are intact in the event of an audit. To update a locked location, expire the old location and create a new one with the updated information.

Change a default outlet code

To take advantage of locationsHoverTT.png, transactionsHoverTT.png must contain a unique location code. The first locationHoverTT.png created becomes the location with the default outlet code for a company. The default outlet code is used as the location code on all transactions that don't have any other location code assigned.

To change a default outlet code:

  1. On the Organization tab, click the Locations button for a company.
  2. On the Locations screen, click Location Code next to the location that you want to be the new default outlet code.
  3. On the Edit: Locations screen, select Default Outlet Code.
  4. Click Save or click Next , and then Save. The location previously designated as the default outlet code has the Default Outlet Code check box cleared.

Change a location type or category

Use Type and Category to define your locations. This doesn't affect tax calculations or returns filing. To change a location type or category:

  1. On the Organization tab, click the Locations button for a company.
  2. On the Locations screen, click Location Code.
  3. On the Edit: Locations screen, select a new Type or Category.
  4. Click Save or click Next , and then Save.

Delete a location

To delete a location:

  1. On the Organization tab, click the Locations button for a company.
    Locked locations (those with a Locked Location icon can't be selected because they've been used in a locked transaction.
  2. On the Locations screen, select a check box next to one or more locations.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click OK to confirm the deletion.

Filter data by location

AvaTax uses the location code to associate transactions with a particular location. This association allows you to:
