Fix Item Import Errors

This article applies to:Avalara AvaTax

To avoid errors when you import items, use these recommendations and best practices:

  • Try a trial import of a few items to increase your familiarity with the import process before importing larger numbers of items
  • Adhere to size limits for each data field
  • Be sure to enter a description in column B for each item. It can be anything you want, but it's required
  • Ensure tax codes in column C are either Avalara tax codes or custom codes that are already entered into your AvaTax account

When you finish adding your items, learn how to manage them.

If an import erros, an error file lists the rows that didn't import. All rows not listed in the error file imported successfully. Use the information in the sections below to troubleshoot errors.

Troubleshoot file imports

To troubleshoot file imports:

  1. On the Tools tab, click View Imported File Status.
  2. On the Import Status screen, in the File column for an imported file, click the Error hyperlink. The Error.csv file downloads.
  3. Open Error.csv and view the error message in the last column for each record that failed to import.
  4. Make the necessary corrections to the records, and then delete the last column (the one with error messages).
  5. Save the file with a new name and import it.
