Edit Nexus Jurisdictions

This article applies to:Avalara AvaTax

Edit nexus jurisdictions to change where and when AvaTax calculates and reports tax for your company. Read about adding nexus to learn more about how nexus and jurisdictions impact tax requirements.

Edit country jurisdictions

We don't recommend deleting a jurisdiction unless a jurisdiction is added by mistake. Instead, we strongly recommend changing the end date for a jurisdiction to today's date. This allows AvaTax to process transactions, such as returns or credit memos, that may be entered in the future.

Removing a country from your country jurisdictions removes the associated region jurisdictions and local jurisdictions.

To edit country jurisdictions:

  1. On the Organization tab, click the Nexus Jurisdictions button Picture of the Jurisdictions button for a company.
  2. On the Country Jurisdictions screen, click the check box next to a Country name to add or delete:

    • One country
    • Multiple countries
    • All countries by selecting the check box next to Country at the top of the list.
  3. Change the Begin Date or End Date if desired. For more information, see Edit jurisdiction begin dates and end dates.
  4. Click Save.

Edit region jurisdictions

Jurisdiction begin and end dates

Each jurisdiction you add includes a begin date and an end date. AvaTax compares the document date of a transactionHoverTT.png to the begin and end dates of the appropriate jurisdiction. If the document date occurs between the two dates, AvaTax processes the transaction. AvaTax calculates a 0.00% tax for all other transactions.

Change the begin date and/or end date for a jurisdiction to meet your business transaction processing needs. For example:

  • If your business is going to establish nexusHoverTT.png in a jurisdiction, you can set the begin date to that future date. When AvaTax processes a transaction for that jurisdiction, it calculates tax based on the document date. If the document date occurs before the future date you set, the tax is 0.00%. If it occurs after the date you set, it's taxed according to jurisdiction rates.
  • Conversely, if your business will no longer have nexus in a jurisdiction, you can set the end date to that future date. If the document date of a transaction occurs before the future date you set, it's taxed according to jurisdiction rates. If it occurs after the date you set, the tax is 0.00%.

Delete nexus from a jurisdiction

When you want to remove nexus from a jurisdiction, we recommend disabling it by changing the end date instead of deleting.

If you delete nexus, post-dated transactions (such as those that were missed or that need to be re-entered) and return credits for purchases that took place before nexus ended won't process correctly.

When you disable nexus instead of deleting it:

  • If you add a transaction prior to the end date, it still calculates tax correctly.
  • If you do a return or enter a post-dated transaction 6 months later, it still calculates.

To disable nexus, set the the date you want nexus removed as the end date for that jurisdiction.

End dates take effect one second to midnight on that day. For example, an end date of 12/31/2099 ends nexus, or removes nexus from the jurisdiction, at 11:59:59 PM on 12/31/2099.
